
According to a new report by the research company BloombergNEF (BNEF), in 2022, 86 gigawatts (GW) of wind turbines were put into operation worldwide. After two years of record growth in the construction of new wind farms, there was a decrease of 15% compared to 2021 due to reasons such as rising costs of turbines, restrictions in the supply chain and uncertainties regarding subsidies for wind energy. The majority of new wind power plants were built on land (89% of the total number of projects), while the introduction of new offshore turbines fell to 9.1 gigawatts (46% less compared to 2021).
The largest supplier of turbines in 2022 was Goldwind, which surpassed Vestas. In 2022, the company Goldwind supplied 12.7 GW of new wind farms, with almost 90% intended for the domestic market in China. The Danish company Vestas introduced into operation 12.3 GW of new turbines and surpassed its American competitor GE (General Electric) by 3 GW, taking third place. Thus, the top three places were taken by companies from China, Europe, and the USA respectively. Envision – another producer from China – took fourth place, while Siemens Gamesa and Mingyang shared fifth place. Chinese manufacturers of wind power plants are expanding their production capacity, with six producers from China entering the top 10 list.
Despite Vestas losing first place in terms of the total number of turbines supplied, it managed to take the lead in offshore wind energy and surpass its competitors Mingyang, Goldwind, and GE. Recently, the company Vestas has presented several new proprietary offshore turbines and is trying to increase its share in this market segment.
From 2015, companies such as Goldwind, Vestas, GE, Envision, Siemens Gamesa, and Mingyang occupy leading positions by the number of turbines supplied. Meanwhile, producers like Enercon and Guodian no longer make it to the top list.
